So after many months of planning and hours and hours of working, I turned in my desk this week for the Emerson School's Dream Desk Project.
Here is how the bucket desk
started...

and the completed transformation.
Myself and 12 other local artists needed to use the theme of 'dreams' in our work, and I used it in a pretty organic way. Bloom...your dreams have roots.
Here is how I described my desk for the for the auction event-
Much like the deep roots of a beautiful flower, when your dreams are nurtured, anything is possible. Multiple layers of the earth are represented by the gravel, coffee grounds (to keep you grounded) and deep, twining roots lead to the blooming, chalkboard top that is perfect for documenting your own dreams. A recycled bath towel provides a comfy woodland seat, while the inside hides a mossy, magical world.
Staying true to its school house roots- left over chalkboard paint from
this project.
For the seat, I was thinking moss, but since I wanted it to be sat in, I picked an even greener option...an old bath towel.
Besides being a great, lush color, I really liked the textured element that the napped towel gave. Like sitting on a woodland mushroom.

To simulate layers of the earth.... gravel, paint, scrap burlap, mosses and coffee grounds cover the base. For those deep, twirly roots wrapping down to the base...rustic twine.

The inside is where the moss came into play...sheets and sheets of floral moss. To accent the woodland scene, I placed a sweet caterpillar and thrift store insects to roam. Oh, and they glow in the dark..perfect for peeking under the hood now and then.
To top it all off .... 2 big bunches of faux peonies flowers and leaves that were clipped and secured onto the perimeter of the desk giving it her crowning glory of blooms.
My desk is displayed at the MATC library thru mid May and will be auctioned off May 18th with proceeds going to the school. Read more about the project
