DIY- Holiday card holder & a giveaway

Last winter, my sister-in-law shared a link from a high end home catalog saying.."I bet you could make something like that? And if you do, I want one " OK...I always entertain a challenge and a gift idea to boot.

Step 1- I needed a crib spring.  Due to regulations and safety concerns, used cribs in general are difficult to find . After coming up empty handed at flea markets all summer, I finally found one in a thrift store. A tad rusty, but all springs in tact.
My suggestion, if you are on the hunt,  is to ask at your local thrift store.  They might keep them in back or be able to direct you to a source.  They are out there and are otherwise going to end up in a landfill.
But back to the project. After a nice cleaning, I evened out the color (front & back ) with a textured spray paint. Almost every brand has one out now.  I used one from Rustoleum and it was instantly aged. Then, for a little festive flair,  2 greenery sprigs were tied to the top. It gives it a little 'finish'. The craft/floral stores have rows of these things. (and yes they are out already)  Traditional, whimsical, snow covered, glittered.....something for every taste. In fact, you could change it up each year.

To display all those gorgeous family photos and cards...clothespins!  But, when I tested out my basic, wood ones they were functional, but really, quite dull.

Luckily, I remembered that I have a crafty friend who makes just the thing to fix that....decorative display clips. Jess at Little Dandelion Studios whipped me up a custom set and suddenly, it all came together.
The clips add not only color to the frame, they provide an excellent way to display without damaging the cards.
For hanging, you have 2 options.  On a sturdy nail in the wall or over the door hangers.  I picked up 2 plastic over the door hooks (like the ones for your bath robe), gave them a matching coat of paint and it looks like it was meant to be together. That way she has 2 options to hang.
I honestly like it better then the inspiration.  Besides,  anything handmade (regardless of skill) has something you can never find in a catalog.
Do not have a crib spring?  An over-sized picture framed with chicken wire (like this) would work, as well as a garden gate or any salvaged metal. Just make sure to file down any rough edges and give everything a protective coat.  Besides the fact it will be in the house, this project is so cute, you will have all of your company taking a closer look.

AND- to help you complete your very own holiday card holder.

Your DIY card holder looks awesome, Beth!!! So much fun. :)

Cool giveaway! My favorite handmade holiday gift I've ever received was a pair of handmade mittens. And my favorite to give would have to be fudge in nicely decorated packaging.

Oh my gosh! What wonderful ideas! Thanks for the great ideas. As far as my favorite handmade holiday gift, it has to be the tiniest pair of handmade mittens as an ornament for our tree (knitted with toothpicks!), given to me by my sister. My favorite to give would probably be one of my collages, suited specifically for the recipient. :D

LOVE!!!! What a great idea! I want one... My favorite handmade gift was my Red Ridinghood doll that I received as a baby - still love her. To give, vintage button jewelry - of course! Or anything purchased off Etsy :)

PS - I'm a fan of both Beth and Jess... BIG time! Love you girls!

I just love your card holder!! I've been on the lookout for a crib spring for some time now - lucky you to score one!

My fave handmade holiday gift is a creche made of clay by a child. It is so very precious, especially since it was given to me by one of my oldest and dearest friends before she passed away.

I am an ambition handmade holiday gift giver. So the time I decided I was going to learn how to quilt and make my mom a packer color themed quilt in a month before Christmas was my favorite and probably proudest gift to date.

(Love your card holder, if I ever see a crib spring I will be snatching it up to my husbands dismay!)

I have a friend who has made me 2 neck scarfs that I love to wear to work! But I think the ornaments that my daughters make out of paper for me every christmas are my favorite handmade gifts that I tuck away for years to come.

Love this idea sooooo much and the clips are adorable!
My favorite gift ever was my dog Holly. I had a choice between a dog and diamond earrings. Considering I have lost every diamond earring I have ever owned and that my dog has given me more love than most people in my life I think I made the right choice.
