I cannot always explain the random things I pick up. All I know is that a little voice yells...'you need that'.

I often have no idea what the end use for 'said' item, but I do know it stirred a little creative part of me, and for that, it is worth saying YES and letting it marinate.

I got my idea for my racket mirrors from a DIY from Country Living, so when I saw another DIY from Flea Market Style I thought...hey I have got a few of those in my stash, that have just been waiting for a project.

Vintage slide carousels turned into mirrors.

Quite modern yet vintage to the core. I have 3 of these fun mirrors. One black, one charcoal & one light grey. Display together or in a grouping.

All come packaged in their original Kodak box. Think of it as a little extra bit of history.

Twice forgotten finds

A sunny weekend, means time to take some pictures. I have spent the last few weeks digging thru my stash of 'end of season' treasures, which seemed to have escaped my mind once the weather got chilly. From books, to toys, to vintage shelf decor, there were some cool things. Combine those with new styles of racket mirrors and some Fisher Price necklaces, and the shop has been restocked post holidays.

Simple arugula pizza

We have all had those days. Long one at the office, tired, hungry. Not motivated to go out, but nothing in the fridge. There is a solution. Filling, healthy and quick quick quick.

Take a frozen flatbread or cheese pizza, a bag of arugula & some dressing and a little Parmesan. That is it.

For the dressing...take an old spice jar, mix 3 parts extra virgin olive oil to 1 part balsamic vinegar . Sprinkle in a little kosher salt, and if you want to jazz it up a bit...grate a clove of garlic, then give it a good shake.

Cook the pizza according to directions. While it's cooking, toss the greens with the dressing and crack in some fresh ground pepper. When the pizza comes out, layer on the greens, sprinkle on some Parmesan, & slice. The warmth of the pizza wilts the greens just a bit. Easy, easy, easy. You'll feel like you are at a local bistro for about $10. Add a spicy red wine and you've got a date night for 2. If you need something more substantial, throw on some roasted butternut squash, marinated peppers, or some sliced up chicken.

Tree of Thrift

This is a tale of a tacky picture turned tacky art duo.

Several years back, our friend Doug made the move from Chicago to make Madison his home. As a bachelor, his apartment was fairly simple, but he did have some decor gems. In his bathroom... this awesomely gnarly tree picture.

Glued onto a beveled wood plaque, a mustardy gold sky framed the tree. Tacky, but I loved it. Each time he moved, the tree came with him and now lives with him and his new wife.

So when I found a dingier version of the "golden tree" at a thrift store, I snatched it up faster than you could say trash, with an idea of making it a set.

Last weeks was Doug's birthday, so felt it was time the doppelganger made its appearance.

I wanted to make a real contrast, so the dark branches turned white, that mustard sky became violet and the autumn brush was transformed into a lush green moss.

It was a hit. AND in case they were wondering where to put this gem... they have an empty spot on the other side of their bathroom mirror. It's like it was just waiting for its twin.

2012 the Year of the Dragon

Today begins theYear of the Dragon. 2012's dragon is that of the water variety, which happens once every 60 years. The dragon is the only sign in the Chinese zodiac that is mythological, but it is also the most power. The dragon is driven, fearless & willing to take risks. Possessing high energy & prosperity, the year of the dragon brings optimism and hope for the year ahead.

Hotel de Glace

In just 6 weeks, I will be crossing a very cool thing on 'my list'. Staying in an ice hotel.

I studied one summer at the University Laval in Quebec City, Canada and fell in love with the city's European charm. Cobble stone streets, old fortress walls and hearing French everywhere. A return trip, with Nate, has been on the list for awhile and when I saw that Quebec City had an ice hotel it became our next adventure.

The 36 room Hotel de Glace opens today and although only open for 12 weeks, the hotel expects thousands of visitors to their grounds. Ice sculptures, guided tours, snowshoeing and even an ice slide make this man made natural fortress a site to be seen and I just cannot wait.

When you arrive at the hotel, you are greeted with a cocktail in the bar served in what else..an ice glass.

Hot tubs & saunas are both on site and when it is time to retire we'll tuck ourselves in our arctic sleeping bags for a cozy nights sleep.

We are only spending one night at the ice hotel and a couple more in the old city. Until then, I am brushing up on my French, searching for great restaurants and making sure I have lots of warm weather gear.

Blogger recently added a button for it on the design tab, but if you Google it I am sure you will find a method for whatever system you have.

Just one more step towards branding and a new focus for 2012. More DIY's, an expanded vintage shop and an all encompassing website. Exciting stuff indeed!

Favorite Finds of 2011

After a long vacation, I am back an back with a bang for my favorite finds of 2011. Some went right to the shop and others found a special place in my home. I hope they give you some vintage inspiration.

My first is a very special one. This vintage plaid garment bag was sold in November to a prop agent in California for the show Mad Men. Yes, that Mad Men. You can bet I will be scouring each episode this spring for its appearance.

Metal is always a hit and when in the form of these old Zoo 101 it is a no brainer.

While tearing down at last May's Vintage Bazaar, I spotted this darling vintage Christmas house. Complete with glittered snow and stained glass windows, it was the star of my table decor this year.

and while scrounging thru my family barn this summer, I unearthed these fabulous Hot/Cold knobs. Perfectly patina'd and really heavy.

This collection of antique phonograph cylinders is true blast from the past. I found that a tall shot glass (set inside) makes for a darling bud vase and keeps the cardboard sleeve dry.

Sets are always a win and when they are Pyrex and in monochromatic shades of green, they are even better.

This little metal dog will fit right in with my existing pack. I named him Felix.

Letters are still the rage and when they are my husbands initial, this neon castoff could not get in my truck fast enough.

When I am searching for a specific treasure, Etsy is my first stop. This bundle of 1930's funny money was the key element in my Budget Surplus lamp. (now for sale at Hatch Art House)

The thrill of the hunt indeed. A 3-D art piece was missing its star, until a trip to a thrift store made the diorama all come together. Also for sale at Hatch

How about this for nostalgia. A pair of Rock um Sock um Robots.

An Italian finger vase. I thought the periwinkle color was fun on its own but when my fuchsia zinnias are added, it pops even more.

Quirky and fabulous. A trio of mannequin arms was just too random to pass up. I have a great project in mind, but the engineering behind it is presenting some challenges.

Owls may be so 2010, but when they are as cute as this little turquoise bank, it becomes timeless....in my opinion of course.

and lastly....an old fish/bait basket. Filled with a string of lights and hung from my porch ceiling, the glow it provides is just magical.

the Runway

There are projects that I think of and come together in a weekend and there are others that takes months.

My Runway trio for example. The last new piece for last weeks Hatch show. I had an old set of 3 blond kitchen cabinets that I wanted to do use together, but nothing was clicking.

Then- a very clever Etsy-er listed these bundles of colorful vintage buttons. I just liked the way the 3 colors looked together and added them to the supply shelf. It wasn't till months later that I put the 2 together and just knew that the buttons needed to be dresses.

After giving the doors a fresh white coat, I quickly sketched out a rough outline, painted the dress a matching color and just started gluing on the buttons. A little paint by number, a little puzzle constructing, but I achieved what I was hoping.

Now- just needed to give them some personality. Of course they needed different hair dos, but the other parts remained similar. Soft flowy limbs, flirty eyelashes and some ruby red lips.

To top it all off. Barbie boots. Not sure where I picked these up, but I was able to scrounge up 3 pair and these girls were off the the show.

Fridge Philosophy

I wanted to create a little something for the show that everyone could bring home. Something that resembled my style,but in a lower price range. How about jar lid and Altoid tin magnets? I have been collecting them for quite awhile and thought they were a perfect vessel for some inspirational words, colorful images and some 3-D elements.

Throughout many times in my life, I have relied on little quotes or sayings to help me put things in perspective and get me back on track. Like a little mantra or positive message, they really can change your mood. Even if that is just putting a smile on your face.

the Dreaming Chair & League of Justice table

To add some balance to all my wall art for last weeks show, I brought some furniture. Early in the year, I found a wonderfully Mod, yet scratched table that couldn't get in my trunk fast enough.

I was able to keep the hip lines, while covering up all the nicks with one of my go to colorful mediums..comic books.

AND- do you know Magritte. One of my favorite artists. Modern, thought provoking and very surreal.

So when I had come up empty when it came to an old wood school chair, I took a theme from Mr Magritte.

The Dreaming chair is solid wood, a cool turquoise blue and dotted with fluffy little clouds.

Just perfect for a writer's desk or any place you need a bit of reflection. Also, as part of my show, these 2 pieces are available at Hatch Art House. Tomorrow- a philosophical idea for decorating your fridge.

Trois Chats & Peony Power

You already saw the first re-imagined picture I did for the show at Hatch Art House, well since 3 seems to be the theme of this show, I had 2 more to share.

First. Trois Chats-

Too kooky to not pass up

this trio got a cool coral frame

some glittered coats (all in an unique color)

and for whiskers, old retail tag ties.

Snagged at an estate sale, this washed out drawing needed some love.

Bright green and primary yellow trimmed in an old rope

while lush pink peonies and coarse floral greens make this one POP.

OH- and this is a fun twist. In the past, I have used framing grade dust paper to finish the back of the pieces. But, this time I added one more recycled twist.

Fun, right? Like a little extension of the re-cycled art itself.

A big thanks to everyone who came out this Friday for my opening reception. My adorable mother made the trek up to surprise me, and it was great visiting with old friends.

This being my second, you'd think I'd gained a bit of knowledge on budgeting my time, but I had a huge list of projects. Although a few did not make this cut, I was very happy with what I choose. A combo of furniture & wall art with of course lots of color. I'll be highlighting the pieces this week if you did not get a chance to come out.

With Halloween in our rear-view mirror and turkey day right around the corner , time to start thinking about all that holiday shopping and gift giving you need to do. As usual there is a great crop of shows and fairs out there to get unique one of a kind handmade gifts for your loved ones. I am not doing any shows this winter, nope not a single one....just shopping, so I will be hitting a few.

a Spring Thing

I just dropped off my first new piece for the show at Hatch next week.

Many might remember this diamond in the rough. Great shapes and size, but just very 1 dimensional.

Well- no more. Spring has sprung.

Yes I know I am the NOVEMBER artist, but it just felt like Spring to me.

Painting the old frame a fresh green didn't hurt.

Then, by using left over paint, floral stems and of course a smidge of glitter, the piece started coming to life.

DIY- Holiday card holder & a giveaway

Last winter, my sister-in-law shared a link from a high end home catalog saying.."I bet you could make something like that? And if you do, I want one " OK...I always entertain a challenge and a gift idea to boot.

Step 1- I needed a crib spring. Due to regulations and safety concerns, used cribs in general are difficult to find . After coming up empty handed at flea markets all summer, I finally found one in a thrift store. A tad rusty, but all springs in tact.

My suggestion, if you are on the hunt, is to ask at your local thrift store. They might keep them in back or be able to direct you to a source. They are out there and are otherwise going to end up in a landfill.

But back to the project. After a nice cleaning, I evened out the color (front & back ) with a textured spray paint. Almost every brand has one out now. I used one from Rustoleum and it was instantly aged. Then, for a little festive flair, 2 greenery sprigs were tied to the top. It gives it a little 'finish'. The craft/floral stores have rows of these things. (and yes they are out already) Traditional, whimsical, snow covered, glittered.....something for every taste. In fact, you could change it up each year.

To display all those gorgeous family photos and cards...clothespins! But, when I tested out my basic, wood ones they were functional, but really, quite dull.

Luckily, I remembered that I have a crafty friend who makes just the thing to fix that....decorative display clips. Jess at Little Dandelion Studios whipped me up a custom set and suddenly, it all came together.

The clips add not only color to the frame, they provide an excellent way to display without damaging the cards.

For hanging, you have 2 options. On a sturdy nail in the wall or over the door hangers. I picked up 2 plastic over the door hooks (like the ones for your bath robe), gave them a matching coat of paint and it looks like it was meant to be together. That way she has 2 options to hang.

I honestly like it better then the inspiration. Besides, anything handmade (regardless of skill) has something you can never find in a catalog.

Do not have a crib spring? An over-sized picture framed with chicken wire (like this) would work, as well as a garden gate or any salvaged metal. Just make sure to file down any rough edges and give everything a protective coat. Besides the fact it will be in the house, this project is so cute, you will have all of your company taking a closer look.

The Vintage Bazaar haul

Oh my favorite vintage flea market, once again, did not let me down. Although being a vendor at the fabulous Vintage Bazaar in Chicago this May was a blast, being a shopper....well, it is cool getting first dibs. Here are the finds that found their way into my truck.

Believe it or not, I do not buy every old globe I see, but when I see an old beauty like this it is no brainer. Wonderfully patina'd colors and a metal black base.

A little creepy maybe, but a bin of mannequin arms was just too weird to pass up. I have a few ideas, but we'll see if I can structurally find a way to make it happen.

A great ole metal scoop. I think I might make it into a shelf, or even just as decor on my porch would work.

The hours I spent playing this game. This is not a remake, it is the original 1981 Atari tape in its original box. Look for it in an upcoming project.

The picture does not do this 80's quilted bag justice. Flambe red and straight up fabulous.

If one vintage bead necklace is good, three is always better.

I still haven't figured out what I am doing with all these retro board games that I have been hoarding, but this one was a childhood fav, so in the stack it goes.

Salvage Art Show- the Snails of Summer

This is the week I am delivering my finished piece for the Habitat for Humanity Salvage Art Show.

For the last few years, the ReStore, (Habitat's donation/retail spot for recycled and building materials), has had a show where they challenge local artists to create works using salvaged materials....pretty much right up my alley right? I was given a $15 voucher to buy my supplies and here is how I spent it.

First the base a cabinet door. Nothing fancy, but a good beveled edge, hardware and a nice size.

Then...these wonderfully, luminescent coils caught my eye. They are roofing nails made for a gun so they are in cool, long strips.

Finally, after perusing my surplus of 1/2 used spray paint....it all started coming together.

6 colors of left-over paint provided an airbrushed looking landscape for my headliners....the snails.

Their path, a nice soft moss, left over from this project. The hanger, the chain that came from this lamp. The wire also proved to be a perfect bendable material for the little guys feelers.

Oh- and that lamp came from the ReStore too...a few years back. In fact the ONLY things that was new on this guy was the glue....one of my greenest projects ever.

The Salvage Art Show is going to coincide with this years Gallery Night. 18 galleries and 34 artists are part of the event so there is lots and lots to see. My piece will be on display on Hatch....also the location of my show this November. The proceeds from the sales of these pieces will be going to support Habitat for Humanity of Dane Co and all the fabulous things they do.

Midwest weekend round-up

If I could clone myself, this would be the weekend to do it. There are 4 great events going on and sadly, I can only go to one.

As many of you remember, last year I was a vendor at the Junk Bonanza in Minnesota. Well, a new job and lack of sourcing time forced me to decline a return visit, but starting today...the awesomeness that is the Junk Bonanza returns and bigger and better than ever.

If junk is not your bag, head on over to the Creative Connection. In their 2nd year, this event is packed with even more inspiring speakers and even craftier handmade goods.

A few states over the Country Living Fair is going on in Ohio. I have never made it to this one, but if it comes from CL, it is no doubt worth the road-trip.

And finally, the one I picked to spend my paycheck at....the Vintage Bazaar in Chicago. I did this show in May and as much fun I had, and even some cool press, I just wanted to shop this time. Spending some time with friends and family didn't hurt either.

DIY earring holder

Way down in the depths of my basement, buried under wood scraps and glass, I found a huge round frame that I had picked up at a thrift store years ago. It once housed a big heavy mirror, but after being buried for many years, the mirror cracked, but I still loved the frame....especially the color. Chipped a bit, but a wonderful salmon pink & really massive.

I am in the process of re-doing our spare room....for the 14th time. One thing I needed to do was to create more drawer space. See 99% of the time, I use this room as my dressing room. Our old Cape Cod, as darling as it is, has the smallest closets ever, so there was no way Nate and I could share the one in our bedroom. So- in an effort to create a little more drawer space, I needed a better place for all my jewelry, especially the earrings.

I pretty much wear drop/dangle earrings exclusively, so when I thought of this idea I was thrilled. Besides, I had been using the empty frame as wall art previously so this idea just made it more multitasking.

At my local hardware store I picked up a small roll of hardware cloth for about $5. (check the fencing section) Smaller holes than chicken wire, but larger than door screen fencing.

After cutting it to size, I stapled it to the inside of the frame

trimmed the edges, added the dangleys and done....instant storage art.

Most of these earrings are works of art in themselves, so banishing them to the drawer just didn't seem right.

You could do this with most any frame. Pick a fun color, staple in the wire and hang. TIP : make sure you give yourself a little bit of room to get the earrings on and off so do not mount it flush to the wall. If you can, just hang thru one of the openings with a longer nail. Or add a couple small sticky furniture pads to lift the frame away from the wall just a bit.

Watermelon, feta & black olive salad

With summer's last hurrah this weekend, I wanted to share one of my favorite summertime salads. It is fresh, easy and a deliciously odd combination of salty & sweet.

Since there are so few ingredients, I suggest to find the best and freshest you can, really lets all these tasty flavors pop. Here is what you'll need

-1 small or 1/2 large seedless watermelon cut in bite sized cubes
- 1 small red onion sliced in half moons
-1- 8 oz package of good quality feta cheese. Your deli might have it packed in water
-1 handful of fresh mint leaves coarsely chopped
-1 handful of fresh flat leaf parsley coarsely chopped
-1/2 cup pitted Kalamata olives (chopped)
-juice of 2 limes
-3 to 4 Tbsp of olive oil
& some fresh ground black pepper

Place the onions in a small bowl and cover them with the lime juice to steep. (takes out a little of the bite) In a large bowl or rimmed platter, add the melon, feta, olives and herbs. Pour in the onions in lime juice. Using your hands or wooden spoon, gently toss. Finish with a generous amount of cracked pepper and serve.

I know...it sounds weird, but I have brought it to many a BBQ and even the finickiest of eaters will be coming back for seconds.
You can make it in advance to let the flavors mellow and marry. If gets a little too soggy from all the moisture being released, just serve with a slotted spoon.

Driftless getaway

I love that Nathan's birthday is at the end of the summer. Besides the weather, the festivals and the outdoor activities, it is also a great time time to explore, which we are always a fan of.

Our friends had told us about a great little cabin a little over 2 hrs west of Madison. An easy road trip with a whole different geography and vibe. About 25,000 yrs ago, glaciers carved the landscape that is now Southwestern Wisconsin, but there was an area that was missed....the drift-less area. Traveling along hwy 14 the landscape starts to get more hilly and the rivers and roads become winding and quiet.

We got to the tree-cabin early evening and after a quick unpack of the truck, settled in on our rooftop

deck to officially start the birthday weekend.

The next morning we headed into Viola to check out a flea market and then down another wooded road till we got to Viroqua . Although the town only has 4,400 people, it is bustling with antique shops, restaurants and markets.

On a recommendation from Rick, the owner of the cabin, we stopped in Optimo Cafe for a delicious breakfast of handmade pastries and omelets alongside local bacon and Kickapoo coffee. Optimo is part of the Viroqua Public Market, which has vendor booths set up inside offering handmade wearables, antiques and jams & jellies.

Speaking of food stuffs...each Saturday, the parking lot across the street is transformed into a farmers market. The driftless area has a large population of Amish, so as you can imagine, the pies, breads and woven baskets were everywhere. Sprinkle in some artisinal cheese and organic produce and it is a one stop shop.

For anything you can't find there, head down a few blocks to the Viroqua Food Coop. Similar to co-ops you'd find in Boulder or Madison, this little gem had all the essentials. Pre-made sammies for our afternoon drive, gourmet crackers and chips, a great selection of mico brews and even some natural toiletries in case you forgot your bug spray.

The area is also home to Wildcat State Park, miles of bike trails and a perfect river for canoeing or kayaking. There are several outfitters that offer rentals as well as shuttles and lots of spots to camp. Again- since the geography here is really so different, you feel you are out west instead of just a couple hrs west.

After another long winding road back to the cabin, we took Abby and went on a long pre dusk walk along the river. The wildflowers, the setting sun, the chirping crickets....magical and so peaceful.

When Sunday morning finally arrived, my birthday boy was greeted by an al fresco breakfast of crepes, fresh berries and mimosas.

Following the river back to Madison, we popped into an orchard outside Gays Mills for a bag of freshly picked apples and a scenic overlook.

For just a tank of gas and 2 days, the 3 of us felt refreshed, inspired and grateful of the natural beauty right in our back yard.

The term "stay-cation" has become quite the buzz word in this tough economy. I like it for a bunch of reasons. Less travel-time/more free time, cheaper, fewer fossil fuels consumed and lastly supporting the folks in my little corner of the world. Vendors, inn-keepers, shopowners. My choice to stay in the area helps them do what they love....and I love what they do. So next time you are needing a little getaway, take out a map of where you live and draw a circle 1-2 hours in diameter from your front door. Take a road-trip, you might discover a whole new world.

Friday Finds

Last weekend, Nate & I took a road trip to celebrate his birthday. The details on that trip to come, but I just couldn't wait to share the goodies I found while hitting some out of town flea markets and antique shops.

A sharpening tool with the greatest patina'd green handle.

Vintage kids flippers. I just couldn't resist the quirkiness. The color was the clincher.

2 dozen matchbooks. Some great images and businesses. I like using them in guests rooms with a candle or for assemblage projects.

You can't beat a mother's cookie recipe. Retro or otherwise.

And like I need any more of either of these. A classic LP and a killer find. 1952 bound atlas....it was $2.50 ! Wait till you see what I do with the images.

My Madison transformation

A continuation from yesterday's post on my Google Places workshop. As you remember, the participants, including me, took old paintings and turned them into something inspired by the city of Madison.

I started with this painting of a mountain and a little house.

and turned it into this, an homage to our state capital.

With the help of a Sharpie, some turquoise paint, a Wisconsin map and a few found objects...

I turned this mountain into a monument.

The colors and textures of the mountain side look strikingly similar to that of the facade of the capital building. Taking a Wisconsin map to covered the lack luster frame and old sheet music for the columns was the icing on the cake. The music symbolizes not only our great music scene here in Mad-town, but to also commemorate the summer tradition of Concerts on the Square.

And I just had to add that 3-D element. Coating a little plastic bathing beauty in bronze paint made her a perfect Lady Wisconsin topping the rotunda's peak.

The sun, is Wisconsin's son. Our previous, and very well loved govenor, Gov. Jim Doyle (also taken from the recycled state's map)

It was by far the quickest transformation I have ever done and I think I have found a new process. Speed art. Less thinking and more doing.

Now that the event is over, I have the perfect place for this Madison memorial, my dear friend Ruth's home. Not only was it just her birthday, but her uncle just happens to be the sun.

Google places

Recognize this little red marker? Its what you see when you Google map something. In early July, I led a workshop at Absolutely Art where I showed folks how to turn tacky old paintings into beautiful works of art. It was all part of a collaboration with Google Places and their new offices opening here in Madison, WI. Four different free workshops were offered thru out town and the only criteria was the finished product needed to have a Madison theme.

I provided the befores and set up what I like to call a topping station. Found objects, glitter, pipe cleaners, ribbon everything they would need to transform these ugly ducklings. The results were just awesome.

Fast forward several weeks where all those paintings, pottery, photography from those 4 different events were on display.

Seeing everyones take on what they love about Madison was really interesting. The lakes, the zoo, the farms. Here are a few of what the participants started with...and their finished Madison creations.

Pheobe thinks of the lakes and beaches when she thinks of Madison.

Nicole's Madison memory is a personal tribute to her husband. The abstract portrayal of the glittered Istmus boardering 2 lakes and dotted with 2 symbolic map dots.

and Allison went architectural with this mod tribute to the Monona Terrace.

The event also highlighted some fantastic local businesses and their products. Delectable cheese from Fromagination, beer from Great Dane brewery and hosted by Fit Fresh cuisine.

So what are you doing 3 months from today ? What... no plans. Well, I have something fun for your calendars. This November, I will be the featured artist at the very hip Hatch Art House on...get this..... 11-11-11. Forget the gloom and doom. 11-11-11 is also extremely prosperous and quite lucky.

The painfully long Willy Street road construction will be over, there will be fall chill in the air and the art will be plentiful. If you have never been, consider this a personal invitation. I will have much more to share closer to the date so stay tuned. But for now....save the date.

bread tab art

Now this is just plain cool. My pal, Diana, over at Fine Diving had been picking up these little bread tabs all summer and instead of tossing, did something incredibly creative with them.

Made it into an awesome recycled art piece. The simple combination of color and design is really eye catching. I just love the way peoples mind work when it comes to found objects. Well done Diana!

Collage like an Ephemerologist

Thursday, I helped my pal Kim celebrate her Bday by attending her innagural Inspire my Life retreat. I say innagural because judging from the instructors, the atmosphere, the workshop line-up and even the welcome packets, there is no doubt their will be another.

I took a class about collaging using ephemera. Uh..what? Until a few years ago, I had no idea what that word was, or more importantly how to pronounce. Ephemera...spoken here, is anything that at one time was meant to be thrown away but instead was kept. It is usually paper, but epherma ranges from a page from a love letter to a beer ticket at a fair, to an image from a vintage bag of candy. Using these types of items in a collage project tell a story, have a history and they are well, interesting.

I started by covering my tiny little canvas with a page from a kids biology book. Then layering on things like a piece of foreign money,

an image from a child's playing card,

a page from an Russian primer

and a cut out of a black and white photo. Along with a few other cut and past images.

Our instructor, Mel, banished our fears of ruining these artifacts and instead showed us the wonders we can create when we rethink the things we toss.

She has a knack for using all types of ephemera from grocery store remnants to mini clippings and tickets to create mini treasures of recycled stuff.

I have uses bits of these tips thru some of my other projects, but this workshop opened a whole new way of creating and I am very excited to try it some more.

a package deal

When you get a gift, don't you love it when the packaging is just as pretty as what is inside...it is like 2 gifts in one. So when I started selling on Etsy and at shows, I wanted to use a packaging that was not only pretty, but easy to reproduce and oh yeah, inexpensive. So when my friend Kim wrapped up one of her darling pendants in one of these recycled envelopes...I just had to copy it.

What you'll need. A magazine (design, fashion, floral whatever), a glue stick and scissors....which are actually optional.

First. Rip out a page...or use the scissors if you want to be neat.

Fold it like you would a letter with the image you want to highlight on the outside.

Now the glue stick. Run the stick in a backwards L. Once on the inner right flap and once on the outer left flap. Then along the bottom of the center. It will make more sense once you do it.

Fold it back together and seal. Left side, then right on top.

To finish, take one more swipe along the bottom and fold it up.

Just to create a finished looking bottom.

For me, I use it for my filmstrip earrings.

I slip the pair in the envelope and since I make them a little long, I just fold the top over.

Voila.....nice and secure and also quite cute. Again if you like things a little less rustic, break out those scissors.

I made over a dozen while watching a 1/2 hour TV show. Easy, green and always one of a kind.

Don't sell things at shows? No worries....these would make great gift card holders, photo folders or envelopes for love notes. Enjoy !

Summer Craftacular

That time of year again... the Summer Craftacular. A modern craft fair loaded with creative creations from the craftiest artist in the area. Wow..that is a lot of C's.

It is this Sunday the 24th from 10-5. The show is once again at the lakefront Eastside Club on Madison's East side. Lots of parking, an ATM, free Wi-Fi and did I mention a Tiki bar in the backyard ? Hosted by the always crafty Naomi of Glitter Workshop, there will be gift-bags for the first 50 shoppers and for the rest of you...well think of it as Christmas in July. I can almost guarantee you won't leave empty handed.

For being the end of June, I am shocked to say, this weekend was my first flea market of the season.

The lack of a few months jump start did not stop me, however, from snagging some fabulous finds at Southern Wisconsin's finest....Elkhorn.

Besides the treasure hunting, I made some delicious summer fruit recipes, researched a few summer vacation ideas and thought of a couple clever new projects....all to be shared somewhere down the road.

As 'green' as I am, I have to admit, I do not have the greenest thumb when it comes to veggie gardens. I have tried, but just end up supporting my local farmers market. Fine by me...leave it to the pros. But, what I do have loads of success with is herbs. They are not only beautiful, fragrant and inexpensive..but they are easy to grow and add so much flavor. Salads, pizza, vegetables...even a bunch arranged in a vase. Fragrant, earthy and long lasting.

I recently gave a few 'non-traditional' herb recipes a try. Very artisanal yet quite easy. They would make great gifts, or treats for your next summer soriee.

First up, simple syrups. Now simple syrup is just equal parts water and sugar. It is ideal for cold beverages, as it adds sweetness with out the graininess of the sugar. Some use a pot to boil the concoction, but I just pour water from my teapot into a pyrex bowl...less things to clean. Give it a stir and the sugar crystals just melt away.

Then, I split the liquid in 2 mason jars. Added a big bunch of basil to one and some thyme to the other. Give them a few hours to steep and you are ready to add to your next beverage.

There is a big movement towards craft cocktails these days, so for me it was equal parts vodka, syrup, ice and an entire fresh squeezed lemon. A wonderful twist on your standard vodka lemonade.

I used this recipe as a model and made a few tweaks.

For the basil syrup.... same idea, just use limes. Very Thai inspired and quite refreshing. Rosemary would also make an excellent mixer with gin. Of course these would be lovely sans alcohol. Pink lemonade, sparkling juice, anything you wanted to give a little zing to.

I made some snacks to go along with the drinks, so I choose another herb and tried my hand at shortbread. Lavender infused shortbread.

I used this recipe and just swapped the tea for lavender. I did make a batch using the Earl Grey, and although quite tasty, just not a good as the lavender. Buttery, crumbly and a hint of floral

So , if you haven't started, you still have lots of summer left. Swing by your local nursery or market this weekend and start your own little herb garden. You won't regret it and tell me your favorite way to use herbs. I am always up for a new recipe.

My dear friend from LA recently commissioned me to make a special 'thank you' gift. Her and her family, spent their spring break visiting friends, who just moved to the other end of the country. NYC. It was not only a chance for the couples to catch up, but for their 2 young sons to do some memorable sight seeing.

I learned a few things about the couples style, taste, a little about the trip and just started with my canvas, a salvaged kitchen door.

and here is what I delivered.

Without being too literal, I wanted to capture not only the joining of two coasts but highlight one of the boys big weekend events...a tour of the Empire State building.

I am not a great realistic drawer, so I went to my downtown library and found a picture book on New York architecture, took it to my local copy shop. I had them enlarge it to 4 times it size. I decoupaged (glued) it on and then gave it a little life.

Adding some pastels to highlight and accentuate all those beautiful lines.

and to bring in the California vibe, some waves. Images from an old painting were molded around the channels in the door to give it some movement. And the glitter...well, it is LA afterall.

Topped off with a big sunny reminder of where they all met.

The door has a thin profile and after adding some framing wire, can be easily hung in a hallway, den or perhaps, little boy's room.

I kept all the patina'd hardware on (as it gave it some history) and love the way the layers of paint and stain peek thru the edges.

It was a challenge (in a really great way). I hope they like it, and it is reminder of good times with good friends.

When I started Green Cricket a little over 3 years ago, I did not have a structured plan, but I did have a list of things I wanted to experience with this new venture. Be creative, meet new people, travel, re-think recycling and get a little press. The first 4 are a pretty regular occurrence, and last week, I was able to accomplish the last, not once, twice, but three times....and from some pretty big players.

Spun-tastic

Remember these lovies? They made my Best of 2010 finds, and this week I debuted them at the Vintage Bazaar in Chicago, along with a cute little plant stand.

I honestly had no idea what they were when I snagged them at a flea market, but loved their mod look. Turns out they are quite collectable and very durable. After Googling them a bit, I found that they are known as Spun Fiberglass chairs from the 60's.

Although natural in color, most of the ones you'll find have been painted white and mine were no different. Since they were a little dingy, I gave them a fresh coat and moved on to the seat.

After looking for months for a cushion that fit the diameter, I turned to my handy hubby to make some forms so I could make my own.

He used a low profile plywood and I used some batting and a vintage vinyl tablecloth for the cover. Seemed to fit the retro vibe and also easy to clean.

2 of them (and the stand) went home with a lucky designer on Saturday, but I still have one left. Check out my Etsy shop for more details.

thinking outside the vase

After a very long winter and cold spring here in Wisconsin, it looks like warmer temps are finally here and all those beautiful blooms are dotting our landscape. Bringing those fresh flowers in are an instant way it brighten your mood and your decor. But why settle for a boring glass vase, when a more unique vessel is probably in your collection. Taking old product tins, cans and cups are a much more creative option.

This coiled oil can highlights the long tulip stems

while this orphan tea cup makes the purple in these hyacinths really pop.

vintage product tins are perfect for big bunches of blooms.

and my little antique recorder cans work great for just a stem. The key to many of these floral re-uses are to include an interior vase. A second hand drinking glass, shot glass or one of those boring clear glass vases. Once you add water, rust and other by products of these old treasures can drastically shorten the life of those bouquets. And don't forget my mom's tulip saving trick.

Craftstravaganza 2011

I am back from Minnesota & the 6th annual Craftstravaganza and what a show it was. From 9 to 5 the Fine Arts building at the MN State Fair grounds was literally packed with shoppers. Considering I went thru nearly every single one of my business cards, I am imagining this is the first visit for many to my site. So, a very warm WELCOME and thanks for stopping by.

the Ocean floor

What a better way to celebrate Earth Day than to debut this oceanic tribute to our beautiful blue home.

Unlike some of my other map chairs, where a cut vintage maps into pieces and affix them to a chair, this time I couldn't bear to cut this one. I love the way you can still see the creases in this National Geographic map from 1967.

I had one in my stash, but it wasn't enough to cover the front & back. So I went to my go to source for all cool old stuff...Etsy and wouldn't you know it...I found another one from this lovely shop.

It is fascinating to see all those mountains, caverns and formations that mysteriously lie beneath our oceans.

The cool blues and jagged topography is so striking together, I just love it.

I have been talking to Tammy over at Hatch about this idea for weeks, so I am very excited to send it her way. If you have not been, it is such an eclectic gallery that has been a great venue for my quirky, recycled art.

Enjoy this Earth day and find ways to make your little part of the planet a little greener, not just today, but everyday.

This week, I finished my chair for the DAIS auction and she is in full bloom.

I named her Rose. Not only because of its floral theme, but like all of the women who use this local shelter, they have a name, an identity and are 'rising' up against their situation.

For the seat and back, I used pages and pages of recycled magazine images of beautiful, cheerful flowers. Lilacs, peonies, tulips...and roses.

And the legs, or stems, covered in a verdant spring green.

The chair had such wonderful lines I wanted to keep, and even highlight, the empty spaces. Finding just the right image to wrap and sculpt around the curves was the finishing touch.

I am delivering the chair next week, with the auction happening in early May. I not only hope Rose goes to a happy home, but also raises a garden full of money for these brave women.

Minute makeover

Presto chango. This weekend, in 10 short minutes, I transformed a vanilla, vanity chair

into a beautiful, vintage boudoir stool.

Although I could have painted the frame and changed its entire color scheme, sometimes it is better to just work with what you have. And what I had was a really great chair that needed just a little love.

By simply unscrewing the cushioned seat and stapling on a new cover (I choose a retro Sears reversible towel) , I made this thrift store wallflower into a real looker.

The hardest decision was which side to use. Vintage towels are a perfect alternative to new fabric. Check out here & here for other examples. They have loads of charm, groovy patterns, very durable....and oh yeah, GREEN. Pick one or two up at your next thrift store outing and create a transformation of your own.

DAIS chair

Today I started working on another charity project, and this time it is a little more familiar. A chair !

It is all for an upcoming event here in Madison "Give a Chair a Chance" benefiting DAIS (domestic abuse intervention services).

DAIS is the only emergency shelter, in Dane county, for women who are victims of domestic abuse and their children. Sadly, this shelter often has to turn away people as they just do not have enough resources. As an artist, I don't always have the cash flow to make the large monetary donations as I would like, so I love when I can participate in an event like this and do my part to support needed programs like this.

The chair is due at the end of the month, so stay tuned for the after in a few short weeks.

my Italian Opera

A month or so ago I was asked to adorn a pair of opera glasses (and case) for an upcoming auction benefiting the Madison Opera.

Although much smaller in size than some of my other charity projects, it was still a challenge, but was really happy with its after.

So, here is what they gave me....

When I think opera, I think Italian, and since I am such a fan of maps...I choose to cover my glasses in a vintage map of Italy. Ironically- the opera's next performance (at the end of the month) will be the Italian classic "La Traviata".

Colorful, whimsical and still quite usable, I was sure to highlight all the popular Italian cities on this small little palette.

and for the case...

Antique sheets of music, and I am talking antique here, from 1892. This piece was part of a collection that I found in our family barn. Since it was already pretty destroyed...I thought I would extend its life just a little longer by turning it into another form of art.

The event is April 30th with all proceeds going to help support the opera.

Fontaine

I pride myself in staying in the know when it comes to stores here in Madison. So, when I stopped into this interior design shop (that I had driven by zillions of times) I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

As soon as you step thru Fontaine's lime green front door you are bombarded by design bliss. Each corner, wall and table are merchandised into little vignettes straight out of a magazine and seriously something for every style.

And how is this for a seafood bar?

jars and jars of delicate shells, urchins & starfish.

I was mesmerized how beautiful they looked massed in these apothecary jars. Makes me want to redo my entire sun porch in a beach theme.

Fontaine is also a full service design studio. The owner, Barry, & his staff are not only wildly talented, but have stocked this little Eastside shop with things straight out of a big city neighborhood boutique. You just have to check it out for yourself...you will not leave empty handed. Oh, and make a pit stop after at Sophia's (a few doors down) for a chocolate croissant. All that shopping might make you hungry.

what lies beneath

One of my cardinal thrifting rules- if something is turned around, upside down or buried under something unsightly.....investigate.

While pursuing one of my favorite spots, I see this, propped up against the back wall.

Just the frame alone was worth a second look. It was huge, and when I turned it over....

This! A vibrant farm landscape surrounded in blooming blossoms.

Now you know how I have a penchant for taking tacky painting and giving them a little love, well this one was just too cool to pass up. Almost 3 ft long and some really great 'bones'. OH- and it was $1.50. See what you can find when you do a little digging.

Now the frame will need some color and I am sure a few 3-D will find their way into the mix. I am hoping it turns out like it does in my head.

Found frames

I just cannot pass up an ornate frame. Whether big or small, glass or mirror, empty and filled. It can always be updated.

This 'before' was found with my pal Kim in a local thrift store. No mirror, but in great condition and an awesome shape.

and here is the after....

I used the attached cardboard backing, gave it a few coats of chalkboard paint and covered the gold frame in a this rich turquoise paint. The whole makeover took just a few hours and the transformation is huge.

Flea markets, yard sales, thrift stores or even your own attic are all wonderful spots to find these frames. Just takes a little imagination and paint and you can have one of your very own.

Other options to do with a found frame....

-get a mirror custom cut to fit

-use metal roofing sheets (from the hardware store) to make a magnetic memo board

- paint and hang empty. A grouping of empty painted frames on a white wall make for an instant art piece.

- frame photos or unique print images

This weekend's calendar makes it official, Spring is here!

On Saturday, I was honored to be a featured speaker at May's Floral Spring Extranagaza and wanted to bring a little twist to a familiar crafty idea.

Taking these thrift store plates & hum drum candlesticks,

and turning them into these. Wonderfully fun cake & cupcake plates.

It really couldn't be easier.

Take an old candlestick, give it a new coat of paint in a bright fun color & glue it onto a white thrift store plate.

I found a silicone type glue works best and dries clear.

That is it.

An array of heights and sizes makes it really appealing.

I did dinner, salad and even little saucer plates. A vintage feel with a modern color palette.

How great would your Easter buffet look with this presentation? Easy, unique and of course green...what could be better?

Perhaps, filled with some delightful treats. Now that really takes the cake.

Spring is in the air. Although, officially it is not quite here yet, I have abandoned my mittens for the season and am not looking back. Spring is why I love living in the Midwest. There is an awaking, a rebirth, a new found energy in every living thing...and that is rejuvenating. Where else would you see people wearing short sleeve shirts when it breaks 40 degrees. I love it and it inspires me in a zillion ways.

For many who know me, it's no surprise that I am a project oriented person. I like a start, a middle and an end. Done, bye bye, on to something else. For as long as I can remember, that is just how I work and finally I am embracing it. So during the days before a show, it's quite common for my mind to start scheming about what I am doing next. The concept, the colors, the objective. Starting a new project is like a shot of espresso. Addictive and invigorating.

I am switching gears after my recent opening and getting ready for an exciting speaking event coming up in Eau Claire. (I'll be talking more about that soon). So it was perfect timing that I was able to hit two great sales this weekend and ride that creative wave.

Opening night

I can hardly believe it is here. 3 months ago, I eagerly accepted an invite to be March's featured Artist at a local gallery Absolutely Art. Not only am a stunned March 4th came so quick, but that I finished 10 new pieces. Some late nights and early mornings, but I am really happy with the way the collection turned out. (especially since it is my first)

I'll have all the pics up next week, but in the meantime here are some previews.

The reception starts at 5 pm tonight at Absolutely Art (2322 Atwood) and goes till 9 . Food from Bunkys, live music, fun people and art compliments of me. Stop by, I would love to see you.

If not, the show will be on display for the rest of the month so you can check it out on your own. Possibly while enjoying a tasty latte at Cafe Zoma next door.

In like a lamb

Happy March everyone! For many, this is the light at the of the end of that winter tunnel & others (like me) the realization that this is not the year I am learning to cross country ski. Either way, Spring is on its way and although it is the opposite of the old adage, March here in Madison is coming in like a lamb.

What a perfect time to debut this little vintage darling. A mid 50's Margret Holbrook childrens suitcase. Just the translucent sapphire handle alone was worth finding it.

But along with that handle is a precious lamb and woodland friends all in soft fluffy hues.

Although it would be great to store desk accessories and such, I think it would make a perfect memory box for a little boy or girl.

the surplus lamp

You have no doubt heard of the recent budget issues not only here in Madison, WI, but all over the US. So many emotions, opinions and agendas. 'A lot' tongue & cheek, but here is my homage to those little pieces of paper that cause us so much drama....the SURPLUS lamp.

A few months back, I thought of an idea, cover an old lampshade with vintage game board money.

So, with the help of this Etsy shop, I found a stash. A 1935 set of vintage Monopoly money. Pale pinks, faded sea-foam green and mustard yellow...perfect and just what I was hoping for. After figuring out the feather pattern, it was just a matter of time until this shade was transformed... all $5739 of it.

The lamp base, recycled of course, found at a favorite re-sale shop. Just the right size with a cool finial, but a very dated brass color. Well, a little safety green paint transformed that quickly and, I think, adds to the quirkyness of this lamp.

Oh and when illuminated...even cooler.

Check out this Danish beauty. It is a vintage Farstrup and is teak.

Uber cool lines with a mod style and a black vinyl seat.

Thank goodness for labels. Although I am learning, I am not that well versed in Euro-design.

This March, I will be the featured artist at Absolutely Art, a wonderfully eclectic local gallery. Friday, March 4th there will be an opening reception from 5-9 pm where I will be debuting a whole new crop of projects.

I titled the show- Treasures & Transformations.

Old drawers turned into dioramas, tacky paintings that have been given a pop-art make over and of course a few pieces of furniture covered in something unexpected.

If you have never been to one of their Friday opening, you must check one out. Very laid back with food, drink and music. Although the opening is just the one night, my work will be on display thru out the entire month. And since the gallery is attached to a cafe, over on the Cafe Zoma side more local art, Jane Fasse will be showing off her collection of amazing paintings.

Antique animals

Early last fall, I was at an estate sale with my pal Molly. Besides the loads of treasures we both snatched up, I came home with a box filled with bubble wrapped antique animals..and a few people. I had no idea what they were, but appreciated their age and knew that someone would give them a good home.

After unwrapping all the parts, I found a whole menagerie of farm animals

All with rich colors and details

but with a few cracks a chips in its ceramic type material.

A curious looking farmer

a conductor or maybe soldier

and a few exotic characters

They all seem to have this wire and metal forms. You can see it here on this guys missing hand.

Although, there is no date, there is a German marking with a LINFOL or LINEOL stamp. I searched for some more info online about the history, but came up with no leads. Makes me even more curious now.

All together, they are quite a collection. I think it was a really good purchase, but am anxious to find out a little more about their origins.

I am contacting a few sources to see if they can shed some light on this collection. A new DVR staple of mine...HGTV's Cash & Cari (an estate sale guru) and Country Livings "what's its worth" column. Any ideas or other sources I should check out ???...email me, or feel free to comment.

love is in the air

7 years ago this Valentines Day, Nate & I moved into our house. After a long day of hauling boxes and cleaning, we were way too zonked to go out for a fancy dinner, but we did one better...a romantic dinner at home. Our new home.

I had a few surprises planned. A gourmet box of exotic chocolates, some party store heart garlands, but the star...cheese fondue. It is really easy and is quite versatile. We always have bread as our dipper, but mix it up the others based on our mood. Sometimes, fingerling potatoes, roasted brussel sprouts or asparagus spears. What ever you like.

Here is my 'go to' recipe courtesy of Tyler Florence. I highly recommend buying a small bottle of Kirsch. It is under $10 and I have been using the same bottle since the start.

Ingredients

1/2 pound imported Swiss cheese, shredded
1/2 pound Gruyere cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 garlic clove, peeled
1 cup dry white wine
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon cherry brandy, such as kirsch
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
Pinch nutmeg
Assorted dippers

Directions

In a small bowl, coat the cheeses with cornstarch and set aside. Rub the inside of the ceramic fondue pot with the garlic, then discard.

Over medium heat, add the wine and lemon juice and bring to a gentle simmer. Gradually stir the cheese into the simmering liquid. Melting the cheese gradually encourages a smooth fondue. Once smooth, stir in cherry brandy, mustard and nutmeg. Use a wooden spoon & stir in a figure 8 pattern...it will help help with the smoothness.

Place all dippers on a big plate, uncork some wine and snuggle in for a romantic night. Enjoy!

My new favorite cooking tool...this Dansk enameled fondue pot that I got at an estate sale this summer.....for $1. Now that is a tasty deal.

Today starts the Chinese New Year. If the last years Tiger was the wave, the Rabbit is the calm. They are truly yin and yang symbols. Something I think we could all use a little more of.

People born in the year of the Rabbit are gracious, creative & sensitive, but a can be a tad self-endulgent. Good things to do in the year of the rabbit? Travel, learn new things and explore your passions and hobbies. Sounds perfect to me, right? Oh, and the motto of the rabbit.....

"Let there be peace and let it begin with me." Amen my bunny friend !

making memories

I don't know about you, but each holiday season I have the best intentions to make all my gifts, send homemade treats to all my pals & construct my own cards. Well, between shows, work and just the overall bustle of the season...it never seems to happen. So- besides saying I will start early next year and instead of scrapping the whole thing, why not just send a 'just because' gift? Sure it is festive to get packages thru out December, but wouldn't a random box showing up on your doorstep mid February, be a little more unexpected? Embrace your procrastination.

As many of you remember, last Memorial Day weekend, 4 of my closest college friends & I all got together to celebrate our 40th birthdays. After the fun filled weekend, I asked the girls to email me their memories. Funny inside jokes, quotes, highlights.....just all the random things that made it special for them. Well, those emails sat in my inbox for months and months, before I thought of a clever and useful way to preserve those memories, but it finally came to me.... ornaments.

Once the concept came together, it was really an easy and fairly speedy project. This would be a great one to try with the kiddies too. Here is what I did.

Found some plain ornaments at a craft store. (since I waited till mid December to get them, they were also 1/2 off). These are plastic and the top comes off so you can fill it when you are done.

Next- print out all those memories. Besides the specifics, date, location...capture the little random things. The things you'll forget in 5 years, but when you read it, you'll smile.

Then, cut them into little strips

add some shrunken photos too...adds a little color as well as a visual memory.

Start with your longest quote (or memory) and use just plain ole Elmer's glue, to evenly coat the back and place it on the ornament. Once you have it where you like it, brush a little of that glue over the top to seal it in place. If you get a little wrinkling, just use your finger to smooth out the bubbles.

Layer them on one by one. Don't get too crazy making it look all perfect. Sometimes random gives the best effect. Give it a few minutes to dry now and then so it doesn't get all goopy. An old muffin tin works wonderfully.

When its all done, give the entire ornament another coat of glue (or Mod Podge) this prevents the ink from bleeding and the paper from peeling over the years. It dries clear, so do not worry about being a little messy.

When dry, use a poly spray, like DecoArt's triple thick to give the entire bulb a protective luster. You'll want this guy to last. Since it looked a little empty just frosted with the haze of the glue, I popped off that top and filled it with some iridescent tinsel too. Gives it a little more finish and looks cool when the Christmas lights hit it. Greens would look cool too.

Finally- I am a big fan of presentation, so after packing them all up in a rainbow of tissue and short little note, they were off to their recipients.

Do not forget to keep one!!! When making memory gifts....always make one for yourself. I have made that mistake in the past. You'll enjoy admiring your craftiness and your trip in the years to come too.

Remember, this is one of those cases where it IS the thought that counts. Don't think you are not creative enough to do something like this. Think of all those grade school projects you made for your mom over the years. How much did she beam?, and if you are like mine....still hangs them up each year. It is not about the quality. If you wanted a pristine, machine produced gift, you would have bought one. Instead, this is about giving a little bit of you as the gift. Your memories, your work and your beautiful vision.

thrifting Thursday

You just can't beat some good treasure hunting to turn a hum-drum day into an awesome one.

Look what I picked up yesterday, and all for under $10 at my local second hand store. A fantastic 'crewel, embroidery large -framed -art- thingy'. A complete Monopoly game. I use the pieces in projects and the cards , I turn into magnets.

I use to sell them in my Etsy shop, but now I use them as giveaways at shows and as order 'thank you's. Very nostalgic...and functional.

Also- this cool antique piece..an old music recorder. I want to make it into a bud vase.

and this grand, little dinosaur.

The shark search got me thinking about using these old toys in other pieces. Which, by the way, was FOUND ! Picked up for .90 at a local thrift store after a tip from a crafty pal. It was just what a was looking for to complete my underwater scene. Still a few more weeks away, but he is a key component.

Opera auction

Remember the Dream desk project last April? Where I, along with several other local artists, decorated old bucket desks and auctioned them off for charity. Well this year, I have been invited to do something very similar....just on a much smaller scale. The Madison Opera is celebrating their 50th season and to commemorate it, they are auctioning off about a dozen embellished opera glasses with all proceeds going to the Opera and their amazing productions.

This April, all the glasses will be displayed and on the auction block at a huge anniversary gala. Besides the glasses, I can decorate the box as well if I choose, but so far I don't have any great ideas. I do not know a ton about opera, but one of my very first blog posts was about one of the great summer festivals here in Madison Opera in the Park. I just picked up my pair Friday so I still have some time to mull over some themes. I think I might see if I can go to a concert or listen to a few CD's while I ponder the idea. Details and pictures to follow in a few months.

Cha-ching! With just a few key strokes, all the sudden I am 10,084 dollars richer.....now if only it were real.

Last week I had a brilliant idea. Take old game money and somehow use it to cover a lampshade. We'll thanks to the wonderful world of Etsy, all it took was a few searches and there it was in this fun shop.

I still have to find a base and do the rewiring, but I have the old shade and plan on making it layered like scales or feathers. That way you can really see all the rich, nostalgic colors.

Most likely it will be debuted at my art opening March 4th, but I am sure I will be giving you all a look too.

Grapefruit & thyme risotto

I know, I made the same wrinkled nose look when I read that title, but it is also what intriqued me enough to tear it out of a Martha Stewart Living magazine, many years ago.

I'll admit, it took me awhile to give it a whirl, but once I did, Nate and I were hooked. The creaminess of the rice, paired with the brightness of the citrus....it is really both a lovely and hearty dish. I have made a few tweaks over the years, but it remains a standard in our house on snowy winter nights, when the citrus selections at the stores are so plentiful.

Now, if you have never made risotto, don't let all those rumors scare you away. It is not hard. If you can stir, you can make it. The key is to have your liquid warming and ready in a small pot. You will gradually add the warm liquid (1/2 cup at a time) waiting till the previous has been absorbed before you add another. It typically takes about 20 min. Really, that is the only trick.

So- here is the recipe...

2 large red onions

1 red grapefruit

1 qt low sodium chicken or veggie broth

1 Tbl olive oil

1 1/2 cup Aborio rice

1/2 white wine

1-2 Tbls chopped fresh thyme (plus a few sprigs for garnish)

1 tsp butter

1/2 cup grated good Parmesan

salt & pepper

Cut one of the onions crosswise, then into half moons and place into a skillet over medium heat with a little bit of salt and oil. You are caramelizing these guys, so put it on the back burner for the rest of the recipe, but give it a stir now and then. Low and slow till they get soft, sweet and fragrant.

Now, zest half of the grapefruit. Boil a small pot of water and place that zest in the boiling water for 3 minutes, just to take the bitterness out. Remove from the water and place aside.

Cut out all the segments of the grapefruit over a bowl making sure to catch all that juice and squeeze the remaining juice too and set aside.

Take a pot (like the one from the zesting) and fill it with the stock, 1 & 1/2 c water and the reserved juice (put not the segments). Let that come to a simmer.

On to the rice. Heat a large (heavy bottom) pot, pan or dutch oven with the oil. Finely dice the other onion and add it to the pan. Cook about 4-5 min over medium to just soften it. Pour in all the rice. Stir it till every last grain is coated with that glossy onion oil (about 1-2 min). For the first dose of liquid, we want it to absorb the most flavor, so add the wine first. Give it a stir and let all that fragrant wine absorb. Once absorbed, start adding the warm broth/juice mix. 1/2 a cup at a time...waiting till each is absorbed before adding the next. The last few cups take a little longer as those creamy tender grains are getting all saturated with the liquid. This can be the easiest to rush, but resist the temptation to just dump all the rest in.

Once all the liquid has been added, stir in those grapefruit segments and the reserved zest and let it warm 2-3 minutes. Finally, add the butter, salt & pepper to taste, chopped thyme and the Parmesan cheese.

To serve, dish into bowls and top with a good scoop of those caramelized onions, some shaved Parm and a spring of thyme.

Your taste buds will come alive. Woody thyme, creamy cheese & the tang of the citrus. You will be hooked. Although it does dirty some dishes, the ingredients are few and also readily available. Give it a try...you'll surprise yourself on how easy it is.

Oh what a year it was. Besides searching for 'befores' to turn into 'afters', this year I found a whole new passion for seeking out vintage and antiques, and I found some gems.

A lot have found new homes thru shows and sales, but quite a few are very content staying with me.

Lets start with maps and globes

a super cool illuminated globe that is the new focal point of my guest room...rewired by a very nice man I met at the Elkhorn Flea.

A 1966 aerial shot of Bayfield, WI. Bought at my first auction this spring. It is huge and now graces my living room wall.

A set of 5 relief maps of Germany from the 1960's. I am not quite sure what I am doing with them yet, but some cool frames might be in order.

Vintage collectables

these tiny vintage metal dogs. I found one in my grandfathers attic and the rest at flea markets. I just love them grouped together....and have even named them. (left to right- Sally, Bear and Molly)

a complete Excelsior stamping set. My jaw dropped when I opened up this box at a recent estate sale. She is up for grabs in my Etsy shop too.

A very lounge-y chair coral that was the hit of last summers Highwood Vintage show. It was in the window of a thrift store and got it for a song.

One of my favorites....a collection of old arrows. These too are in my shop and are fun as is, but would be great displayed in a vase.

This awesome life preserver from a Japanese fishing boat. It has landed on the side of my garage in the backyard.

My blue tapestry luggage set, ironically found at separate locations. The hand bag is all mine, but the suitcase will be in my shop shortly.

Sad news...the Bohemian Bauble on Lakeside is closing at the end of the year. But- in spirit of the season and as a big thank you to all her loyal customers, Tami is throwing a Bye Bye Bauble event tonight from 6-9 at the shop.

All her awesome jewelry will be 20%, and she has a whole new crop of fantastic earrings, necklaces, bracelets & even cuffs for your man.

I myself have several of her pieces and I get compliments on them all the time. The rest of the shop is packed with all other sorts of holiday treasures too, so if you have always wanted to check it out. Now is the time. The Bohemian Bauble is located at 404 W Lakeside right off John Nolan (next to the Washington Island coffee house).

Although this is the end of the brick & mortar shop, the artists of the Bohemian Bauble are going to be having quarterly-ish road shows offering up all their handmade awesomeness. I will be sure to keep you in on the loop of the schedule.

Holiday craftacular 2010

a purple Christmas

When I was about 11 or 12, all I wanted for Christmas was a pair of purple Nikes. Two shades of violet suede and leather topped off with the trademark white swoosh. Besides being my favorite color, these new shoes were on many a young girls list that year. Which is what makes this story all the more special.

My parents had divorced a few years prior, but we still spent every Christmas Eve together. So that night, he came bearing a wrapped box. Inside, one of my old tennis shoes spray painted purple. Turns out those shoes were backordered all over the country, but would be back in stock late January. Who cares....I GOT PURPLE NIKES FOR CHRISTMAS !!! Honestly, that is all I needed. I had enough toys and stuff to play with, I could wait 3 more weeks.

When they finally came in, it was Christmas all over again I wore those till they fell apart. I don't think I realized how special that gift was until years later. So, when I found that spray painted shoe in my mom's garage this summer, I smiled so big. Funny how the shoes are long gone, but the so-called teaser gift is the one I now treasure. Thanks Dad...you did good.

Enjoy the flurry and shopping of the season. It is fun to spoil your love ones and get spoiled yourself, but remember....it is always the thought that matters in the end.

Holiday Craftacular

Held at the same site as the summer version, the Eastside club will be filled this Saturday with creative gifts for everyone on your list. Hatch

This Friday, there is a hot, new spot opening on Willy Street. Hatch Art house is a new local gallery showcasing local artists, many specializing in recycled goods.

I got a sneak peak when I was droppping this chair

for their opening, Friday the 3rd. With tidal blue walls, industrial concrete floors and some awesome windows, Hatch is a wonderful addition to the new retail space on the NW side of Williamson street (across from the Coop).

Owner Tammy Schecter, an artist and Wisconsin native, had been wanting to open a space like this for years, and upon moving back to the area from the Portland scene, made it a reality.

Check out their soft opening this Friday or their Grand Opening next Friday the 10th, 6-9pm.

Leg-warmers DIY

Graduating HS in 1989, I was fortunate enough to have worn leg warmers when they came around the first time. Along with my Madonna-esque neon lace headband, I was all the rage.

Last year, leg-warmers made quite the comeback with the hipsters and can still be found in many shops. So, while watching the morning news and seeing the temp here in Wisconsin was 29 degrees....10 with the windchill, I knew that just my standard running capris would not suffice en route to the health club. I just needed a little something to cover that lower half of my leg while going from the house to the car, and from the car to the club's front door. Too bothered to put on another pair of pants OVER the knickers, leg-warmers seemed the perfect option. Unlike my 1984 self, I would be using these less for fashion and more for function. Ah, practicality, my age must be showing. So, I took an old sweater and went to work. Here is the super quick project that not only saves you money, but keeps you warm and recycles.

The sweater - in my pile to go to Goodwill. Bought on sale a few years back. The black had started to fade and the ribbed V-neck really did nothing for me.

Now, since I wanted this to be a 'no sew' project, I cut to the inside of the seam. There would be some fraying, but the main shoulder seam remained in tact.

How easy was that? The natural angle of the sweater construction would also serve as a bit of a shoe covering too.

And...if you really wanted to recycle...you also have a sweater vest. But, I think I will just use the rest for scraps or rags.

Ta-da! Seriously took me 3 minutes and kept my legs so nice a toasty. Channel your inner Jane Fonda and whip up yourself a pair. Your gams will be oh so grateful and give you that extra motivation to hit the gym before the season of eating begins.
